Why SPAs are problematic for Google
In a traditional HTML site, all content is present in the source code the server sends to the browser. Google reads it, understands it, and indexes it immediately.
In a SPA, the server sends minimal HTML β usually an empty <div id="root"></div> β and the actual content is generated dynamically with JavaScript in the user's browser. This creates a dependency: if the JavaScript doesn't execute correctly, the page remains empty.
Googlebot has been able to execute JavaScript since 2019, but with significant limitations:
Deferred rendering: Google doesn't render pages immediately. It first crawls the HTML and then places the page in a rendering queue that can take hours or days to process. This means JavaScript-generated content is indexed with significant delay.
Limited rendering budget: Rendering JavaScript consumes computational resources. For large sites, Google may decide not to render all pages, leaving entire sections unindexed.
Silent errors: If a React component throws an error in production, the content for that section doesn't render. In the user's browser, a fallback or error message might appear. For Googlebot, it simply doesn't exist.
The 5 most common indexing problems in SPAs
1. Content invisible in the source code
This is technical error #11 in our ranking of the most common SEO errors, and the most basic and most frequent problem. If you "View Source" on your site and see empty HTML with only scripts, Google sees exactly the same thing on its first crawl pass.
How to check: in any browser, right-click β "View Page Source" (not "Inspect Element", which shows the rendered DOM). If the main content isn't visible there, you have a problem.
2. Client-side routes without SSR
SPAs handle navigation on the client side with JavaScript (React Router, Vue Router). When Google tries to directly access yoursite.com/product/123, the server may return a 404 because that route only exists in the JavaScript router, not as a real file or route on the server.
Required solution: Server-Side Rendering (SSR) with frameworks like Next.js or Nuxt, or at least static pre-rendering of the main routes.
3. Dynamically generated metadata
The <title>, <meta description>, and <link rel="canonical"> tags are set by JavaScript after the page loads. Google can read them during rendering, but with the delay mentioned above. And if there's an error in the component that generates them, the page keeps the generic template title.
How to check: use the "URL Inspection" tool in Google Search Console to see what title and description Google actually sees for each page.
4. Aggressive lazy loading
Components that only load when the user scrolls (lazy loading) can be invisible to Googlebot if they depend on scroll events that the bot doesn't trigger. This is especially problematic for below-the-fold content that's relevant for ranking.
Practical rule: all content you want Google to index should be present in the initial DOM or load without requiring user interaction.
5. Silently failing APIs
SPAs depend on backend APIs to fetch data. If an API returns a 500 error or a timeout, the React component may show an eternal loading spinner. For Googlebot, that section of the page simply doesn't exist.
How to check: review server logs looking for Googlebot User-Agent requests that returned errors.
